Archie was a primer on an existence that was insistently wholesome, perpetually teen-aged.ILLUSTRATION BY OLIVER MUNDAY

THE CORRUPTED AMERICAN INNOCENCE OF ARCHIE COMICS

There were hundreds of Archie Comics lying around my parents’ house, the leftovers of my six siblingsAny issue could be opened to any page to reveal a swift, bland story, like a kind of I Ching we idly consulted for easy comfort. We liked to read and re-read them in the same way we liked to stare at the back of a cereal box over breakfast—they were a pleasant place to rest our eyes, a warm bath for the brain.

Archie was a primer on an existence that was insistently wholesome, perpetually teen-aged. The characters made fudge and kept up Teddy-bear collections, called their cars “jalopies” and entered radio contests. The weather in Riverdale was always sunny, unless it was neatly snowing, and no one aged or suffered beyond one or two pages of slapstick conflict. The drama was muted, domestic, and these mild travails of the Riverdale teens took on a gnomic quality, life flattened to a pleasing loop of school and soda shops and the houses of parents, everything happening at quaalude speed.

More from our series on American people, history, and traditions.rosperity and family and friendship—this was the promised landscape of Archie, the postwar fantasy on offer, though it’s notable that the comic started in 1941. It created a parallel space where the Second World War wasn’t happening, where innocence wasn’t interrupted by the violence thousands of miles off the page. Captain America may have been battling Adolf Hitler, but Archie was battling against his curfew and Reggie’s vaudeville machinations, the realm of flat tires and banana peels. You would suffer, but only briefly. You would work hard to earn money for the class camping trip and then you would attend and enjoy yourself. Maybe you would be forever offered the choice between two adoring girls, a blonde and a brunette whose faces and bodies were exactly identical. Maybe life was a series of preferences you toggled between endlessly, never forced to choose, never forced to encounter any consequence. That was the dream, to exist in this limited sphere where the real world would not intrude. As we grew older, we began reading the comics with a sharper eye. Catching spelling errors, repetitive story lines. Continuity problems. The innocence started to rupture around the edges. There was only one black character in Riverdale—Chuck Clayton, a 1971 addition. Occasionally, cartoonists failed to color Chuck in, leaving him, for a few frames, in blazing white outline. Could this be any more American, even the most minimal gesture of diversity undermined by thoughtlessness, subject to a whim?Or Betty and Veronica, teen-age girls drawn with pervy precision by the male cartoonists, men who traced the bodies of the girls over and over and over, who posed them like pinups, often barely clothed. Their nipples obvious through tank tops, their skirts riding up their thighs when they sprawled on their pink beds. In some panels, a segment of their white underwear could be seen.
