This Is How I'll Stress Less in 2017

In this series, professionals describe the skills they’re building this year. Read the stories here, then write your own (use #SkillsGap in the body of your post).

I’m kicking off 2016 with a few focused goals and resolutions: to complete an adventure race with my family, to drive HotelTonight to profitability, to travel to at least one new-to-me country, and to stop binging on the chocolate-covered almonds from the HotelTonight snack wall.

One area I’m particularly looking forward to focusing on: mindfulness.

I’ve always been into physical exercise and eating right, but until recently, I hadn’t applied that same focus and rigor to my mental well-being. Exercise helps me manage stress levels, but meditation takes it further, and also helps me focus, be more productive, sleep better, and achieve a calmer state of mind. Studies show that meditation can actually change the brain, and I’m convinced that a healthy mind will be shown to be just as important as eating well and exercising in living a long, fulfilling life.

I’m driven by quantifiable goals. I use Runkeeper to track my runs and bike rides and Fitbit to track my movement and heartbeat. Getting the data, progress reports, and reminders from these services has made me more fit and healthy. I’ll be applying the same data-driven approach to exercising my mind. Saying I want to work on deep breathing or meditate more is great, but I thrive when I set specific goals and measure my progress. I’m really liking the app Headspace, which tracks your stats and progress (like average length of your meditations, total number of sessions, total time meditating, and how many consecutive days you’ve used the app). Approaching meditation can feel awkward, especially when you’ve never done it before. Headspace makes it a lot easier to dive in.

I’ve also been trying to reserve a few minutes every day to focus on deep breathing, particularly on stressful days. Sometimes it’s as simple as paying attention to my breathing as I walk to the kitchen to grab a coffee, while other days I’ll pop into one of our conference room “phone booths” to refocus for a few minutes. Calm.com is also a great service for doing a brief de-stressing. These short sessions have been extremely beneficial in clearing my head and helping combat stress, and they’re easy to fit into my workday.

2016年月日 - 78jitong - 元旦快乐My family’s onboard with this goal — we’ve started doing a weekly family meditation once a week on Sunday nights. My sons (age 7 and 10) look forward to it, and it’s rewarding to teach them the value of this practice while they’re young.

I’m just getting started in working on my mindfulness resolution, and I’m excited to see where it takes me in 2016. I believe everyone can benefit from the peace of mind and focus that meditation brings. I’d love to hear your experiences and tips in the comments.

Catch me on Periscope (@samshank) Wednesday, January 13 at 1:30pm PST, where I'll be chatting more about this topic and answering your questions.
