How Students  had Looked For A Job In 2016

The start of the calendar year is an exciting time for students. Students looking for work starting in May will start applying to jobs this week, hoping to land interviews in the next couple months.

Employers used to flock to campus to recruit talent, but now have moved their job search online, often even refusing to accept resumes at job fairs when they do decide to attend.

As students start looking for jobs, I thought I would take time to highlight how technology is changing their job search, and the steps a student should take to find a job in 2016.

More resources than ever before

The internet has created more hiring resources than ever before. Now, employers have multiple options to recruit talent and this will impact your job search. Here is an example of the hiring resources a job seeker may be using in Toronto, Canada.

That is a lot! And I didn’t even list them all.

If a student limits themselves to one or two hiring resources, or only uses the job board owned by their university or college, they will be missing out on a ton of opportunities.

The challenge that this creates for the job seeker is that they need to figure out a way to manage this entire process across multiple hiring resources. Managing the process will empower the job seeker to follow-up with hiring managers, track opportunities, and stay productive on a weekly basis throughout a job search that will take on average four months.

Large supply of candidates

As emphasized with the previous point, technology has made it easy for employers to connect with hundreds of candidates. A free posting on indeed.com in a popular role will result in hundreds of applications with the average online posting receiving 118 applications.

This has had an obvious impacts on the job seeker. You will need to apply to more jobs, and take more time to work on your resume so that you stand out in the application process.

Job seekers who are struggling tend to fall on two sides of a job search spectrum:  they are either applying to hundreds of jobs a week, or being far too selective and applying to three or four a month.

A job seeker needs to find the balance between applying to too many jobs with no focus, and being too selective about your opportunities.

Emphasis on relationships

The social world has had an impact on the hiring process, with employers placing increased emphasis on relationships when hiring candidates. An employer is not likely to know each candidate they hire, but they are going to want to know more about you, and develop a relationship with you before they offer you a job. For job seekers, the impact is obvious.

No longer can a job seeker rely solely on online applications to find their next job. After applying to companies online, you should go out of your way to interact directly with hiring managers, and attempt to built a rapport before the interview process.

What Students Can Do

If your university or college does not offer job search management (JSM) software, you can still create and organize a process on your own. Save jobs that you are interested in, and tailor your resume for each position. Then, track each job that you apply too in excel, making sure that you track information about hiring managers and when each application will close.

Then, after the application closes follow-up directly with the hiring manager to develop a personal relationship. Don’t hesitate to reach out to hiring managers on LinkedIn and learn more about the company. Develop a process and ensure that you are making progress on a weekly basis.

If you want to set a goal, try to spend 20 minutes a day looking for a job. If you do this with structure, you will find a great job before you finish up at school in April. Good luck!
