Innovations Over Internships: Why You Should Start Your Business in College

内部的创新:为什么你不能在学校开始你的事业。

Like most college students across the nation, my senior year was one of the most stressful years of my life. I was struggling through my thesis, my GPA was eh at best, and while my peers were trying to secure employment for themselves, I was trying to create employment for myself.

During my junior year, I cofounded a company that had momentum but was still struggling to get off of the ground by the time graduation rolled around. While things didn’t pan out as we hoped, the lessons learned along the way were invaluable. They helped mold me into the entrepreneur I am today. Even though I made a ton of mistakes and learned a lot of tough lessons early, I would easily do it all over again if I could.

Being an entrepreneur in college gave me purpose. Before my junior year I had no real interests, and hadn’t even began to think about what I may want to do after graduation. I figured I would graduate, get a job in finance, make some money and figure out what my passion was down the road. Once I was introduced to the world of entrepreneurship all that changed. I started looking at everything around me as a business. From the company that sells concrete to innovative tech ventures. I was hooked. When I had the opportunity to be a cofounder, I immediately jumped at it.

Over the next two years, I sacrificed my time, internship opportunities and my own finances to follow my passion. Even though it was tough, I would still strongly suggest anyone that has the means to start their own venture in school to do it. I was lucky because I had the support system around me to make it work. Many students don’t have the support I did and have to spend college providing for themselves or trying to gain employment to help their families. While I completely understand and respect that, for those that have the time and energy to dedicate to starting their company in college, I highly recommend taking the dive into entrepreneurship. Here are a couple of reasons to take the dive.

  1. The support: From your family to the school’s administration, most of the people around you want to see you succeed. If you have an idea or want to start a business on campus, you can most likely find a professor, administrator or alum that has experience in your field and is willing to help. More colleges are building entrepreneurial communities at their schools and starting incubators that provide aid for students entrepreneurs.

  1. Youth: You’re young and in school. You have time and you have the safety net to make mistakes. Aside from class and a possible job, most students have some time on their hands to dedicate to starting a business. There is no 9-5 taking up most of the day. Once class is over, you have so much time to build. College is the one time in your life that you will have this much recreational time to focus solely on yourself and what you want to do. Again, this isn’t the case for everyone, but for those that can afford to go out every night I suggest putting some time aside to invest in building your empire early.
  2. Time management: While students may have time on their hands, life is and will always be, about balance. Whether penciling in time for your significant other or morning classes, your business will always be a top priority. College is a good time to learn how to set expectations, standards and personal-protocols to keep your life and business in order. Starting a business in college forces you to understand that time IS money earlier than most.
  3. Experience: When your peers are worried about which party they’re going to and you’re worried about your servers running smoothly, you’re already thinking differently. While they land internships in specific departments, you will be monitoring every department of your company. Even if your business fails, you will gain skills and perspective few of your peers will have. No experience in the work world can compare to starting a business in college. This is why experience as a cofounder on résumés is held in such high regard.
  4. Resourcefulness: Starting your own business will force you to get scrappy quick. Whether piecing together your last dollars to pay bills or beating down doors for your first client, everything is on you and your team. The ingenuity and creativity you pull away from the college entrepreneurial experience is unparalleled and honing these skills pays dividends in and outside of your business.
  5. Resilience: Entrepreneurship is all about peaks and valleys. One day you’re at the highest of highs and the next you may be at the lowest of lows. While toughing out the lows is a little easier to do on a campus, it is still good preparation for the lows that come post graduation. This makes it a little easier to stick with it when times are rough AND you have rent due.

Every entrepreneur knows your business is your child and everyday it’s on you to make sure that child is taken care of. Starting your business in college is similar but the resources and opportunity presented available allow entrepreneurs to be better “parents” earlier. My experience in college has helped me many times over and I still use the lessons I learned in the past to make sure I avoid the same mistakes today.

Simply put, if you’re in school, start a business. Now. It doesn’t matter if you cut hair or build the next Snapchat. Start. It’ll make you a tougher cookie on the outside whether you work for yourself or not. Parent’s, professors, loved ones of students etc, encourage your college student(s) to take the dive while in college. I bet it’s one of the most rewarding experiences in their lives.
